BACKGROUND
Ashok Jhunjhunwala serves as a Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. Prof. Dr. Jhunjhunwala is also associated and Head at the Telecommunications and computer Networks Group (TeNet) of IIT Madras. He co-founded Novatium Solutions Pvt. Ltd. His research interests span Telecommunications, Computer Networks, wireless communication systems and Fibre Optics, and he is particularly active in developing cost-effective wireless telecommunications solutions. He has been a Pioneer in enhancing industry-university interaction in India and is leading an effort to launch Internet Exchange in India. From 1979 to 1981, he also served at Washington State University as an Assistant Professor. Since 1981, he has been teaching at IIT, Madras. He has made an Advisor to the Universal Service Fund and has led research in developing low-cost technologies. He serves as a Member of Governing Council of National Internet Exchange of India Ltd. and also serves as a Director of Institute for Development & Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT). Dr. Jhunjhunwala served as the Head of the Electrical Engineering Department from August 1998 to July 2001. He has been a Director of State Bank of India Ltd since September 14, 2005. He has also been a Non-Executive Director of Polaris Software Lab Ltd., since June 2001. He serves as an Independent Director of Sasken Communication Technologies Ltd. Dr. Jhunjhunwala serves as a Director of Banyan Networks Ltd., Midas Communication Technologies Private Limited (also known as Midas Communication Technologies Pvt. Ltd.), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), Banyan Networks Pvt. Limited, Jataayu Software (P) Ltd., n-Logue Communications Pvt. Limited and HTL Limited. He has been an Additional Director of 3i Infotech Ltd. since October 19, 2006. He serves as a Director of Novatium Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Dr. Jhunjhunwala has been an Independent Director of Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Ltd. since April 12, 2007. He also serves as a Director of Tejas Networks Pvt. Ltd., Tejas Networks India Ltd., Sasken Communications Technologies Ltd., Jataayu Software Pvt. Ltd., Vishal BharatComnet, National Research Development Corporation Ltd. and 3i Infotech, Inc. Dr. Jhunjhunwala has made significant policy contributions as a Member of various government bodies and councils including the National Advisory Committee on Communications and Information Technology (NACCIT)- Ministry of Communications and IT, Engineering Sciences Research Committee-CSIR, National Advisory Committee- ISRO and the boards of VSNL and BSNL. Dr. Jhunjhunwala has over 200 research publications to his credit. He awarded the Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Award in 1997, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1998, the Millennium Medal by Indian Science Congress in 2000 and H.K. Firodia for "Excellence in Science & Technology" award in 2002, Shri Om Prakash Bhasin Foundation Award for Science & Technology for the year 2004. Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Lecture Award by INSA for the year 2006 and IBM Innovation and Leadership Forum Award by IBM for the year 2006. Dr. Jhunjhunwala has also been awarded by the central government with Padma Shri in 2002 for his pioneering work in the Science, Engineering and Telecommunications category on the eve of India's 53rd Republic Day. He is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Science and the Governor of International Council for Computer Communication (ICCC). Dr. Jhunjhunwala completed his B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1975 and pursued his M.S. and Ph.D from the University of Maine, U.S.A. in 1977 and 1979, respectively.
