March 04--A free career clinic being held Saturday for the unemployed and underemployed will offer a gently used suit and bus token to attendees.
The "Suit Up! Career Clinic" event is a partnership between BB&T, Jubilee Jobs of Lexington, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Lexington, and credit counseling company Apprisen.
The event will be held inside a 40-foot mobile classroom, dubbed the BB&T Bank Bus, that will be parked at Community Ventures Corp.
Banking employees will offer career and resume assessments, advice on interview skills, and a free credit report and review. Lunch will be provided.
Catholic Charities will be bringing business suits, khaki pants and polo shirts, among other clothing, to the site for participants, said Annie Ormsbee, coordinator of the Bridging the Gap program for low-income individuals and families.
For the unemployed, nice dress clothes are a "catch-22," she said.
"You need money to buy a suit to get a job, but you don't have a job," she said. "We try to help people with whatever barriers they have and one of those gaps is not having something to wear.
"Not only does it help an individual's confidence, but it looks good to the employer."
If participants cannot find clothing that fits, they will be issued a voucher to Catholic Charities' clothing store, Ormsbee said.
