Sept. 15--What color comes to mind when you think of Starbucks? Black, right? Try a little green, too.
Starbucks is building its first drive-through-only coffee store in Hampton Roads at North Great Neck Road and Virginia Beach Boulevard in Virginia Beach.
It also will be its first in Hampton Roads that will be LEED-certified, providing energy savings and environmental benefits, a spokeswoman said. LEED is a "green building" designation for leadership in energy and environmental design.
The 620-square-foot store also is among the first six in Starbucks history preassembled elsewhere using composite materials. The goals include being "innovative in our design and thoughtful in terms of environmental impact," the spokeswoman said. The exterior has a dark, wooden look. Panels on the second level feature images of trees.
The Virginia Beach store will open in a couple of weeks. Operators of other businesses in London Bridge Shopping Center hope some of the coffee drinkers will buzz by. They're just driving through, said Ian Cheng, general manager of American Asian Food Market, "but maybe they'll see us and come in."
Johnny Pollard, co-owner of Pollard's Enterprises Inc., which has its corporate office and one store nearby, said, "At least they're not a chicken place."
