Oct. 03--Despite job cuts during September at American Express in Weston and Royal Caribbean in Miami, Florida suffered half the job cuts in the month compared to those a year ago.
There were 863 announced layoffs in the state compared to 1,818 in September 2012, said outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas in its regular report.
But year-to-date, job cuts in the state so far total 15,968 compared with 13,259 in September a year ago.
Nationwide, planned job reductions fell to their lowest level in three months, with employers reducing payrolls by 40,289 in September, down 20 percent from August. But September's cuts were 19 percent higher than the 33,816 announced the same month last year, Challenger said.
The biggest cuts across the U.S. were in the health care sector, the third time in the last five months health care has led the reported layoffs, Challenger said.
