Oct. 19--There are some businesses that just won't stay put.
One of them: Chris Juhl's Games on the Go Palm Beach, a mobile video arcade.
Games on the Go Palm Beach is a bright red RV filled with about a dozen video game stations, from an old-school Pac-Man arcade machine to a large touch screen to play Fruit Ninja, a popular game also played on smartphones and tablets.
It cruises around town taking the games to birthday parties, fundraisers, schools, corporate and community events. Games on the Go Palm Beach officially launched in September. It celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday.
The new business is a franchise of a Deerfield Beach-based company, Games on the Go. Juhl hired the Deerfield mobile arcade last year for his son's 10th birthday. He said his son, and himself, liked it so much he wanted to be part of it.
"My 10-year-old said 'this is the best thing ever,'" Juhl said. "I thought what a wonderful business. Everyone is happy to see you and they pay you money."
Though start-up costs can be quite "intensive."
"You're basically buying another house," Juhl said, investing about $45,000 of his own money and financing the rest of the nearly $200,000 needed to get the RV rolling.
The Boynton Beach resident said business has been slow since its launch, but is hopeful it will pick up in upcoming months.
Games on the Go Palm Beach charges range from $600 for a 2-hour minimum, $950 for four hours and $1,400 for a whole day. Special rates are available for tax-exempt organizations, churches, schools and other groups, Juhl said. The RV pulls up to any Palm Beach County location, and parts of Martin County.
Karl Wahlfrid has booked the Palm Beach franchise twice, once for his son's birthday and then a second time for the Opening Day of the East Boynton Little League, which he coaches.
"The kids loved it," Wahlfrid said.
He said it was the most popular attraction on Opening Day. "We had bounce houses, but they were all going for the games."
Terry Shea, founder and president of Games on the Go, said the Palm Beach franchise is the first for his company, which was founded in 2006.
"I feel like Santa Claus every time we drive up to a party," Shea said. "I'm putting smiles in kids' faces. It doesn't get any better than that."
