Oct. 22--Greg Widener says his clothing store, MoCo Men's Clothing on West Second Avenue, has a corner set aside specifically for men who are bored of the tedium of women's boutiques, shoe stores and accessories.
"We have a flat-screen TV and a fridge stocked with water and drinks," Widener said. "They are welcome to hang out and check out the ball game scores until their women are finished with their shopping, and maybe they might find something for themselves while they are here."
MoCo Men's Clothing, owned by Widener and his wife, Monica, opened Sept. 30. It had a ribbon-cutting event Friday. The store features local and made-in-America brands, including Collared Greens, Southern Point, Southern Marsh, Over Under Clothing, Loggerhead, Southernly Stated and Southern Catch. The prices range from $25 T-shirts to $120 winter jackets.
"Everything we carry is local," Widener said. "The furthest place we get our items from is Louisiana. We focus mostly on Southern casual wear, but we have some high-end items as well."
MoCo's Men's Clothing is the second store for the couple. In February 2012, they opened MoCo Creations in Winston-Salem, carrying mostly women's clothes. After the success at this location, customers began asking whether they would start carrying men's wear. They happened to be in Lexington helping a friend at her store when they noticed a for lease sign in the building across the street.
"We were at the right place at the right time," Widener said. "We knew the location was ideal, the timing was right, and we signed a lease that very day."
The Wideners are residents of Davidson County who live in Churchland. Greg Widener is a graduate of North Davidson, and Monica Widener graduated from West Davidson. He said that supporting local business is important to them.
"Our flavor is a local feel," Widener said. "We want to support our town and support local small businesses."
The name MoCo comes from a hybrid of his wife's name and their dedication to her new endeavors.
"The Mo is for Monica and the Co if for commitment because we are committed to our Christian faith and also to make our businesses succeed," Widener said.
MoCo Men's Clothing is at 30 W. Second Ave. The hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, check out its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/mocosmens.
