May 15--WEST HAVEN -- The Planning and Zoning Commission approved a plan for what will be the city's second
"The commissioners were a little bit concerned about the height of the sign," commission Chairman Gene Sullivan said Wednesday.
But "one of the arguments (the applicants) made is that the Sawmill Road area, where it used to be residential years ago, has now become more of a commercial corridor -- and they were right," Sullivan said. The commission approved the plan Tuesday night.
McDonald's' representatives from the BL Cos. of Meriden, "only felt that 18 to 20 percent of the people" who might patronize the McDonald's "were going to come from the highway," Sullivan said.

A previously approved Firestone Complete Auto Care Center already is under construction on the other side of Walmart, next to Aldi, just off the entry drive to St. Louis Catholic Church.
Michelle Carlson, senior project manager for the BL Cos., engineers for the project, could not immediately be reached for comment.
The only McDonald's in West Haven is at 1129 Campbell Ave. near University of New Haven, although the restaurant at 280 Kimberly Avenue in New Haven is just a few hundred yards from the New Haven-West Haven border and another lies just over the Orange line on Boston Post Road.
