Sunday Business Notebook: Aldi comes to town; an Ace Hardware owner gets an offer he can't refuse [The Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville :: ]

July 05--Aldi grocery store is coming to St. Augustine. The German-based chain, which also owns Trader Joe's, will open this year in the Seabridge Shopping Center on U.S 1. Kmart closed in the center in 2012.

The store will be the first Aldi in the area, but the company also has filed plans to build a store in Middleburg, in front of the Lowe's on Blanding Boulevard. A spokeswoman said she could not comment on when that store will be built or open.

The company will hold a job fair for its St. Augustine store on Saturday, July 12, at World Golf Village Renaissance, 500 St. Legacy Trail from 7 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

It will hire 15-20 associates ($10.50 an hour), shift managers ($14.50) and manager trainees ($21).

Trader Joe's will open a store in Jacksonville Beach this year, its first in the area.

BROOKLYN STATION

Shoppes on Riverside, the new retail development on Riverside Avenue, isn't open yet. But it's already got a new name: Brooklyn Station on Riverside.

The center also has its third tenant: Zoes Kitchen, which will close its restaurant 1 mile further down Riverside. The restaurant chain is joining the two previously announced tenants, Fresh Market and Corner Bakery Cafe.

Paul Maxwell, vice president of Regency Centers, the project's developer, said the change was a matter of branding the center with the neighborhood.

"We just wanted to honor the neighborhood and historic element of the area as a point of connection between Riverside and Downtown," he said.

The first openings are planned in October.

HALL'S NURSERIES

After operating for 33 years, Hall's Nurseries and Ace Hardware in Mandarin has closed. Owner Joe Hall said it was simply because he had a good offer.

Cedar Crossing Enterprises of Jacksonville paid $1,722,040 for the 2.2-acre property at 11524 San Jose Blvd. and Paul Meadows of Cedar Crossing said he plans to develop a strip shopping center there. He's got a couple of tenants lined up but not quite finalized, so he won't identify them yet, he said. But he expects to do so soon.

Meanwhile, the family-owned Hall's on Blanding Boulevard, which opened in 1955, continues to operate.

ETC.

McDonald's received a permit to build a restaurant at 11320 Baymeadows Road, just east of I-295: $600,000, 4,394 square feet, Southland Construction.

A $575,000 building permit has been issued for a 3,482-square-foot restaurant with a drive-through at 10422 San Jose Blvd., at the corner of Oak Bluff Lane. That's the site where a planned Chick-fil-A ran into so much neighborhood opposition. Eventually, though, it was rezoned for a restaurant and Cabana Grill was announced to go in there. Ganaway Contracting has the contract.

Krispy Kreme will open its newest location, 7612 Merrill Road, at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The first 100 people in line get free doughnuts for a year. (Drive-in doesn't count.)

MinuteClinic has opened a new walk-in clinic inside the CVS on U.S. 1 in Callahan, it's first location in Nassau County. It's staffed by nurse practitioners and open seven days a week.
