July 16--The Blue Mountain Action Council Food Bank got a $1,500 boost this month from the
The money was an added donation in recognition of the Plaza Safeway store, which it turns out was one of the top branches in the country late last year during the company's annual holiday food drive.
As part of the 2013 "Help Us End Hunger (Every Bag Counts)" drive, the Plaza Safeway was one of the top 100 branches across the country for the number of bags collected for local food banks. The store collected 1,825 bags, nearly double its 2012 tally.
Customers and employees were encouraged to donate through daily announcements over the intercom from store Manager Scott Armentrout. A number of people contributed $100, which supplied 10 bags of food to the food bank. Each bag contained a can of tuna, a box of crackers, a box of instant mac 'n' cheese, canned vegetables, a pound of spaghetti or macaroni, 2 pounds of rice, a box of stuffing and a can of cranberry sauce.
Altogether, the bags weighed 16,596 pounds -- enough to provide 13,830 meals to those in need. Armentrout presented the additional $1,500 check to BMAC Executive Director Steve Moss, along with Safeway employees, on July 7.
