Nike introduces World Cup uniform for Spain's men's basketball team [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore. :: ]

July 23--Let the parade of uniforms begin.

Nike on Wednesday introduced the uniform the Spanish men's basketball team will wear during the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Spain is host of the Aug. 30 to Sept. 14 tournament.

As Nike is not an official FIBA World Cup sponsor, only hints at the tournament's identity are offered in the company's announcement. In this case, the event is called "one of basketball's most important events this September."

The 24-team tournament features several countries outfitted by Nike, including the United States, France and Lithuania (whose 2014-15 uniform Nike introduced June 10).

The Trail Blazers' Victor Claver was among the Spanish team players posing in the Nike duds along with Pau and Marc Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro, Sergio Llull, and former Blazer Rudy Fernández.

The Nike news release said of the uniforms:

Spain's rich culture is the design inspiration behind the new kits. The home kit colors -- challenge red and midas gold -- reflect the country's bountiful sunshine "El sol," led the design process, pulling from the bright yellows in the early morning to the deep reds in the later afternoon. The away kit color will be white.

Both kits feature red and yellow hues meshed together in the 26-degree speed graphic, beginning at the side seam of the jersey and short, and fading toward the back. The speed graphic represents a distinctive basketball point of view, based on the roughly 1,000 directional changes, or "cuts" that a player might make in the course of a game.

Also on Wednesday, Nike announced a social media-driven campaign encouraging basketball players worldwide to submit videos of "their baddest moves." Winners of the "Summer Is Serious" competition, that requires postings to Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook or Vine, will win a trip to Barcelona for "the world's largest pickup game" on Sept. 7.
