Big Y opening Old Saybrook store Thursday [New Haven Register, Conn. :: ]

Aug. 21--OLD SAYBROOK -- Big Y is beefing up its presence among Shoreline towns with the opening of a store Thursday in Old Saybrook.

Construction of the 54,300-square-foot store at 28 Spencer Plain Road began in March of this year, according to officials of the Springfield, Massachusetts-based supermarket chain. Big Y spent $9 million building the new store.

This is the company's sixth Shoreline store along the Interstate 95 corridor between Branford and Mystic. Nearly half of Big Y's 67 stores are based in Connecticut.

"All of us at Big Y are excited to offer the Old Saybrook community a brand new shopping experience and a new option for their grocery and lifestyle needs," Charles D'Amour, Big Y's president and chief operating officer, said in a statement.

The Old Saybrook store will employ 140 people, 80 of who are new workers, D'Amour said. The new employees have been training at Big Y locations in Guilford and Old Lyme in preparation for Thursday's opening.

The store will carry a variety of items produced by Connecticut businesses, including:

--Ooh-Fah teriyaki sauces from West Haven.

--Ashlawn Farms coffee roasters of organic and fair trade coffee from Old Saybrook.

--Colabro Farms cheese products from East Haven.

--Old Saybrook's Pasta Vita specialty foods.

The Old Saybrook store opening completes a busy summer for Big Y in Connecticut. Big Y opened a store in Cheshire in June and completed a $1.6 million renovation of the chain's Newtown location that same month.

The new supermarket is part of a larger retail development, Max's Place shopping center. Max's Place also includes a Kohl's department store that is scheduled to open later this year.
