Tesco today updated the market on its plans to become a major player in banking and selected a major software company to set up the infrastructure for its big push in financial services.

Bank technology company Fiserv Inc. has landed a deal to provide a financial software system to a major British bank, the company said this week. Milwaukee-based Fiserv, which has a big presence in Central Florida, said it will provide its Signature "core banking" system to Tesco Bank, known as the United Kingdom's largest supermarket bank.

Tesco Bank has selected Fiserv, Inc. and the Signature™ bank platform to provide its core banking solution. Tesco Bank is the UK’s largest supermarket bank, with over six million customers and 28 financial products and services and is in the process of migrating its banking products onto a number of new Tesco Bank platforms.

Fiserv, a financial technology company, plans to train the first wave of an estimated 419 workers in February. Wednesday, company representatives were at Catawba Valley Community College for the first of four information sessions with prospective employees.

HICKORY -- Seventeen million dollars -- that's how much the Hickory City Council voted to borrow to build the Northeast Wastewater Treatment Plant Sewer Project. The money will come from the State Revolving Fund and will be repaid over 20 years at 2.5 percent interest. In other business, the council voted to: Give $130,243 in economic development incentives to Fiserv Inc. over a seven-year span.

HICKORY -- A financial technology company will hold four meetings this week with prospective employees of its new customer care center. Wisconsin-based Fiserv Inc. announced in October it would open the new center in February, creating more than 419 customer service jobs over the next three years.
