Maximus Inc. said Thursday it moved to a profit in its fiscal fourth quarter, as the consulting, systems and program management services company announced the sale of one of its units. The company said its net income rose to $8.6 million, or 48 cents per share, for the three months ended Sept. 30 from a loss of $25 million, or $1.35 per share, during the same period a year earlier.

Sacramento County's Board of Supervisors approved a $117,480 contract with a consulting company to review the county's overhead costs and -- hopefully -- find places to cut for next fiscal year's budget. The board unanimously approved hiring Maximus Inc. to review "overhead" costs including management, administrative functions, accounting tasks and other places officials hope to "streamline."
