The company provided capital expenditures guidance for the year 2013. In 2013, the company continues to expect capital expenditures to be approximately $20 to $25 million and depreciation and amortization is expected to be approximately $20 to $22 million. The company continues to expect to close an additional 30 to 45 stores in fiscal 2013 and 2014 to reach its optimal store count of 225 to 250 stores in North America. These select store closures are expected to transfer approximately 20% of sales to other stores in the same markets, which is consistent with the average transfer rate of the stores closed since 2011.

Build-A-Bear Workshop announced that it plans to continue expanding its new store design in 2013. The newly designed stores received rave reviews when they were introduced in six locations in the U.S. in the fall of 2012. Overall sales in these locations have exceeded expectations. Given the strong results, Build-A-Bear Workshop plans to open 20-25 stores in the new design throughout North America in 2013. The first three stores to open in 2013 are Mall of Georgia in metro Atlanta, Ga. on April 26, Orland Square in metro Chicago, Ill. on May 3 and Northshore Mall in Peabody, Mass. on May 10. A number of the stores opening this year are located in Simon Properties, including the Mall of Georgia, Orland Square and Northshore Mall. The new stores heighten the traditional bear-making experience with a bold new design that incorporates modern technology.
