China Mobile, KPN and iBasis Completes First International VoLTE Roaming Calls Based on IMS Architecture
Oct 14 14
China Mobile, KPN and iBasis announced the first successful implementation of international VoLTE roaming between mobile operators based on IMS local breakout architecture with home routing solution. Enabled by KPN subsidiary iBasis, the mobile operators are preparing for a smooth commercial rollout of VoLTE roaming to their subscribers in China and the Netherlands respectively. Globalization and increasing demand for the high-quality of service of LTE are driving mobile operators to implement VoLTE and VoLTE Roaming as the next logical step after deploying LTE in their national networks and LTE data roaming internationally. China Mobile will commercially launch VoLTE service in China at the end of 2014. China Mobile International and iBasis, parties with proven track records in delivering international IP-based services, are providing the IPX interconnectivity between China Mobile and KPN. Key network components were provided by Huawei. VoLTE represents a significant gain in network efficiency and end-user convenience. For example, customers will be able to make voice calls over the LTE network while downloads continue in the background. Other features, including HD (high-definition) voice and the ability to switch instantly between crystal clear voice and high quality video, provide an unparalleled user experience. The trial proves the potential that China Mobile and KPN customers could enjoy the full VoLTE experience while traveling abroad once VoLTE has been made commercially available to their customers. iBasis Support for VoLTE: As Mobile operators expand beyond their domestic deployments to offer international VoLTE calling, they face significant challenges as they strive to provide a seamless, high-quality experience for their subscribers and to fully realize the economic value of the new technology. The iBasis solution supports both local breakout and home routing and helps operators overcome challenges such as global reach for VoLTE calls, signaling and media interworking between VoLTE and non-VoLTE networks, supporting VoLTE global roaming and exploiting HD Voice capabilities. With a single connection to the iBasis multiservice IPX, operators gain access to hundreds of destination countries around the world and to the full portfolio of iBasis Voice and Data capabilities. iBasis also provides a robust VoLTE test environment with interconnection and test locations around the world to help operators ensure that they are ready for commercial launch.
