Copel Signs Concession Agreements for Two Gas Exploration Blocks

Copel signed the concession agreements for two of the four gas exploration blocks it won at the 12th oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) rights round held by national petroleum agency ANP in November 2013. Copel won the four blocks as a part of consortium with local firms Petra Energia, Bayar Empreendimentos e Participacoes, each with a 30% stake, and Tucuman Engenharia e Empreendimentos with 10%. The investments in the two blocks are estimated at about BRL 100 million (USD 45 million/EUR 32.9 million) in the first exploration phase of four years. If the consortium's studies prove the areas' potential, the production there may continue 27 years. The two blocks cover an area of 6,000 sq km (2,317 sq miles) in Pitanga and Guarapuava regions, in Parana sedimentary basin. The concession contracts for the other two blocks will be signed on June 5, after an analysis by the country's anti-trust body Cade. These areas will require more detailed studies as they are believed to contain shale gas reserves.
