Harmonic Unveils New Video Software Platform
Apr 11 14
Harmonic has unveiled Harmonic VOS, an extensible software platform which will reportedly enable virtualized media processing from a single software platform. Harmonic encompasses historically discreet functions from ingest to playout, graphics, branding, compression, packaging and delivery for broadcast and multiscreen applications. Operating virtually in IT data center environments, VOS can scale up or down to accommodate peaks in demand based on capacity and functional requirements across all video services.
Harmonic to Demonstrate End-To-End HEVC Solution for Delivering Live 2160P60 10-Bit Ultra HD Content
Apr 3 14
Harmonic will demonstrate the end-to-end HEVC solution for delivering live 2160p60 10-bit Ultra HD content. In collaboration with companies including Broadcom Corporation, Sigma Designs, Vigor Systems, and ViXS, the Harmonic broadcast workflow supports the delivery of live, linear playout and VOD Ultra HD content to consumer-grade TVs and set-top boxes (STBs). Highlights include: the first consumer-grade demonstration showing live streaming of Ultra HD content, based on company's HEVC encoding technology and the XCode 6400, a 2160p60 10-bit SoC chip from ViXS Systems, used to decode and display live content to a UHDTV via HDMI 2.0. An end-to-end solution for delivering 2160p60 Ultra HD VOD content over IP networks featuring company's ProMedia(R) Xpress high-performance transcoder with HEVC support, sent by the WFS(TM) file-based workflow engine to a MediaGrid shared storage system, and streamed using the ProMedia Origin stream packager and server to consumer devices in the MPEG-DASH format. A 2160p60 Ultra HD linear playout workflow featuring company's WFS, ProMedia Xpress, and MediaGrid solutions integrated with an Advertio transport stream playout platform from Vigor Systems, to deliver an Ultra HD linear channel. An Ultra HD 120-Hz broadcast workflow powered by Harmonic ProMedia Xpress frame-rate upconverted on Sigma designs high-performance and cost-effective 120-Hz Ultra HD TV platform. Sigma Design's Ultra HD TV platform is comprised of an Ultra HD TV SoC that enables HEVC decoding (STV7603) and an innovative motion judder removal and frame-rate conversion SoC (FRC8000) for providing the best picture quality on large screen displays. The first standard-compliant live 4K Ultra HD broadcast workflow, powered by company's ProMedia Xpress transcoding and decoded by Broadcom's BCM7445 Ultra HD video decoder solution.
TDC Deploys Comprehensive Multiscreen Solution from Harmonic
Mar 18 14
Harmonic announced that TDC has deployed a comprehensive multiscreen solution from Harmonic to deliver time-shift services with catch-up TV content through its YouSee and TDC brands. The total solution includes Harmonic's ProMedia(R) suite of multiscreen production and preparation applications, NMX(TM) Digital Service Manager video network management solution, and MediaGrid shared storage systems. Leveraging its extensive range of adaptive bitrate technologies, Harmonic's solution enables TDC to deliver high-quality streams of 100 channels to more than 1.4 million subscribers on TVs, PCs, tablets, and smartphones. Harmonic's ProMedia Origin stream packager and streaming video server and MediaGrid shared storage system are tightly integrated to optimize the delivery of catch-up TV content for TDC's multiscreen service. ProMedia Origin enables sophisticated adaptive stream encapsulation and encryption processes for a variety of HTTP adaptive bitrate protocols, as well as high throughput multi-format streaming from a unified platform. Together with Harmonic's MediaGrid, they enable independent scaling of storage capacity, bandwidth, and streaming capability. This powerful scalability will allow TDC to easily expand its multiscreen services with time-shift TV, control CDN costs, and generate additional revenue streams in the future.

Intigral Deploys Harmonic's Headend Solution
Mar 14 14
Harmonic announced that Intigral deployed a Harmonic headend solution to support its IPTV and OTT multiscreen services. Through a high-density, scalable architecture, Harmonic's integrated solution allows Intigral to cost-effectively prepare and deliver high-quality live and VOD content to regional telecommunications operators for viewing on TVs, PCs, smartphones, and tablets. Harmonic's market-leading Electra 9200 universal multichannel encoder provides high-quality, low-bandwidth MPEG-4 AVC encoding of SD and HD video content for Intigral's IPTV services. Leveraging a high-density design that supports up to eight output services per chassis, Electra dramatically lowers Intigral's capital and operational expenses. Through a rich feature set that includes integrated audio encoding tools, GbE networking, and enhanced serviceability via removable power supplies, fan assembly, compression modules, and processing cards, the Electra 9200 increases video quality, reliability, and operational efficiencies for the digital media company. The encoder features a scalable architecture that will grow as Intigral's market requirements change. Intigral is using Harmonic's ProMedia Live real-time transcoders to convert baseband SD and HD MPEG-2/MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) content into multiple streams optimized for OTT multiscreen delivery. Harmonic's advanced video compression technologies provide premium HD video quality at the lowest possible bitrate. In addition, ProMedia Live simplifies processing by efficiently handling metadata information, such as language, captions, ad signaling, and insertion upon input and output. ProMedia Live works flawlessly with Harmonic's ProMedia Package to enable sophisticated transcoding, encapsulation, and encryption processes from a unified platform. VOD content for Intigral's OTT multiscreen services is powered by Harmonic's ProMedia Carbon file-based transcoders. ProMedia Carbon performs transcoding of high-quality SD and HD video content from a file-based architecture that can easily be scaled in the future. This Harmonic solution also supports a massive array of acquisition, editing, broadcast, Web, and mobile formats to enable the distribution of high-quality HD content on any screen. ProMedia Carbon is controlled via Harmonic's WFS file-based workflow engine, which provides automated processing of high-volume transcoding tasks to further maximize operational efficiencies. Harmonic's ProMedia Origin streaming video server optimizes the delivery of Intigral's OTT multiscreen services relying on a range of content formats for smart phones, tablets and connected TVs, as well as industry-standard protocols, including Apple HLS, Adobe HDS, and Microsoft Smooth Streaming. Integration with ProMedia Package minimizes rack space, simplifies the workflow, and maximizes the operator's cost savings.
