Con-Way Freight to Deploy Trailer Skirts from Wabash National Corporation to Improve Fuel Efficiency, Reduce Carbon Footprint
Apr 10 14
Con-way Freight announced it is outfitting its line haul trailer fleet with DuraPlate(R) AeroSkirts(R) to increase overall fleet fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. The specially designed DuraPlate AeroSkirts improve trailer aerodynamics, reducing wind drag and contributing to improved fuel economy and trailer stability. Con-way Freight has contracted with Wabash to retrofit some 16,000 trailers used in the company's line-haul operations. Installation of the skirts began earlier this year and is expected to be completed by August. Combined with the company's other fuel-savings initiatives and technologies, the addition of the trailer skirts is expected to help reduce fleet carbon emissions by some eighty million pounds of carbon dioxide annually. The EPA SmartWay(R) approved DuraPlate AeroSkirt is a durable aerodynamic solution for over-the-road trailers. Its proven structural composite material, DuraPlate, consists of two external steel skins thermally bonded to a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) core, for superior strength that resists damage. A proprietary spring-bracket design allows for inboard and outboard deflection, to further resist potential impact damage, leading to longer service life.

Wabash National Corporation's Walker Barrier Systems Builds Mobile Clean Rooms for Texas A&M University System Facility
Mar 11 14
Walker Barrier Systems, a producer of isolation and containment equipment within Wabash National Corporation's Walker Group division, announced that it has built and delivered the first of eight mobile clean rooms for the Texas A&M Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing (CIADM). The Walker Barrier Systems mobile clean room design will allow the NCTM to manufacture clinical grade materials at enhanced levels of compliance. Walker Barrier Systems units, constructed with Wabash National's DuraPlate(R) composite panel technology, are built to support a broad array of processes and platforms that will be required by CIADM to manufacture biosecurity medical countermeasures. Construction of the mobile clean rooms began in May 2013, and all eight are expected to be in operation at the NCTM by early 2014. The first unit was delivered in January 2014.
The Texas A&M Center for Innovation is home to the National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing (NCTM), which provides a flexible facility architecture for the development and production of vaccines and therapeutics for use in clinical trials. This adaptability is achieved using mobile clean rooms, which are small, self-contained laboratories configured for individual manufacturing processes. This technology represents a major breakthrough for the manufacture of drugs and therapeutics, as mobile clean rooms provide completely isolated and contained environments that enable multiple therapeutics to be manufactured simultaneously in a single facility.
