Background*

Dr. John P. Howe, III, M.D. has been Chief Executive Officer and President of International Health Foundation Project HOPE (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) since May 2001. Dr. Howe is responsible for the nonprofit relief agency's latest humanitarian aid mission back in the region where it all began. He serves as Senior Advisor to the Chinese Center for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention. After 45 years of providing shipboard and land-based health ... care and medical training to nations all over the world, he joined Project HOPE in May 2001. He served as President of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 1985 to 2001. Dr. Howe served as the Health Science Center's Chief Executive from 1985 to 2000, leading the University's Medical School, Dental School, Nursing School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School Of Allied Health Sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy Program. Under his guidance, the Health Science Center rose to national prominence, landing on numerous surveys of the top medical schools and research institutions in the country. Dr. Howe serves as the Founding President of the Texas Society for Biomedical Research, a Member and Past Chairman of the American Medical Association's Council on Scientific Affairs, and a Former Member of the United States Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. He served as Chairman of the Texas Statewide Health Coordinating Council, a group chartered by the state legislature to develop a health plan for Texas. He serves as a Honorary Trustee of Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Formerly Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research). Dr. Howe has been a Director of Beverly Enterprises Inc. since 2001. He has been a Director at BB & T Corp. since January 2005. He also serves as Director of San Antonio Medical Foundation. He serves as a Tenured Professor in the university's Department of Medicine. He served two years in the Army Medical Corps and later completed the Health Systems Management Program at Harvard Business School. He served as President of the Texas Medical Association and the Bexar County Medical Society. Dr. Howe's numerous Honors and Awards include the U.S. Army's Commander's Award for Public Service, the People of Vision Award from the Texas Society to Prevent Blindness, the Award of Excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators, the National Humanitarian Award from the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine, and the Surgeon General's Exemplary Service Award. In 1994, Dr. Howe received the distinguished Alumnus Award from the Boston University School of Medicine. In 1998, he received the "Mr. South Texas" award, an honor given by South Texans to leaders who have made significant contributions to the rapidly expanding region. He has been featured on National TV news reports and in National Journals as a Leader in the Biosciences. He represented the United States at a Tri-National Conference on Health in Mexico City, a Forum designed to address multinational health concerns in the wake of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Dr. Howe holds a Bachelors Degree at Amherst College and Medical Degree at Boston University's School of Medicine.
