Background*

Dr. Jan M. Lundberg, Ph.D. has been the President of Lilly Research Laboratories since January 2010. Dr. Lundberg has been an Executive Vice President of Science & Technology at Eli Lilly & Co. since January 2010. Dr. Lundberg served as an Executive Vice President and Head of Discovery Research at AstraZeneca PLC until November 2009. He was instrumental in delivering more than 150 drug candidates to the AstraZeneca's pipeline. Dr. Lundberg was responsible for discovery ... research and supported clinical development of potential therapies for cancer, infection, central nervous system disorders, pain, cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal conditions, and inflammation at AstraZeneca. He was also responsible for discovery-enabling technologies, discovery informatics, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, translational science and safety assessment at AstraZeneca. Dr. Lundberg had a leading role in external activities, including in-licensing of projects and technologies, as well as acquisitions of biotech companies. His organization was involved with both small molecules and biologics at AstraZeneca. Dr. Lundberg co-founded Aerocrine AB in 1997. He has an extensive research experience. Dr. Lundberg served as the Senior Vice President, Head of Global Discovery, since the Astra-Zeneca merger in 1999. Before the merger, he served as the Head of Preclinical Affairs, AstraZeneca AB, with responsibilities for Discovery build up of enabling technologies, project Co-ordination and evaluation. Dr. Lundberg serves as a Member of Board of Directors at BioCrossroads. He has been a Member of the Swedish Medical Research Council and also of the Advisory Board for Drug Approvals at the Swedish Medical Product Agency. He served as a Director and Member of Health Section Governing Board at Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). In January 2003, Dr. Lundberg was appointed Honorary Director of Pharmacy at Uppsala University. He was a Professor at the Department of Pharmacology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm before joining Astra AB. Dr. Lundberg has published more than 500 scientific articles, mainly related to mechanisms of cell signalling in the nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. He has won a variety of research awards and he is a highly cited author on www.isihighlycited.com in the areas of Biology & Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Neuroscience. Dr. Lundberg has received a number of prestigious awards, including the Jahre and Fernström prizes. During the past 10 to 15 years he has been one of the few Swedes listed on “100 most quoted researchers in the world”. Dr. Lundberg has a Medical Education from University of Gothenburg in Sweden. He has a Ph.D. from Karolinska Institute. Dr. Lundberg attended Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota.
