Prior to that, Dr. Starr was a National Research Council Associate at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and was studying nuclear membrane transport, cell surface receptor function and protein intracellular trafficking. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, including research papers on Fluorophore-Assisted Carbohydrate Electrophoresis in the diagnosis of lysosomal storage diseases and in the identification of patients with mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), a rare, progressive and debilitating genetic disorder. His work in the development of diagnostic tests for lysosomal storage diseases has been funded by several grants from the NIH and other institutions. Dr. Starr holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the State University of New York Health Science Center, in Syracuse, New York and a B.S. from Syracuse University.
