Background*

Mr. José María Aznar serves as the President of FAES (Foundation for Social Studies and Analysis). Mr. Aznar is a distinguished Scholar in the Practice of Global Leadership at Georgetown University, where he teaches various seminars on contemporary European politics and trans-Atlantic relationships at the Edmund A. Walsh School. Mr. Aznar leads public dialogues on pressing contemporary concerns in collaboration with other members of the faculty. He is an Honorific President ... of the Partido Popular, party in which he served as an Executive Presidency from 1990 to 2004. He was a Lawyer and Tax Inspector. Mr. Aznar joined Spain’s Popular Alliance Party in 1979. He served numerous political positions throughout his career, including a Member of Parliament of Spain throughout four legislatures and a Head of Regional Government of Castile-Leon. Mr. Aznar serves as the Chairman of Latin American Advisory Board and Member of Global Advisory Board of JER Partners L.L.C. He serves as a Member of International Advisory Board at Barrick Gold Corporation. He has been a Director of News Corp., since June 21, 2006. He serves as a Member of Advisory Board of Centaurus Capital Limited. Mr. Aznar has been a Member of The State Council since 2005. Since 1990, Mr. Aznar served as the Chairman of Spain’s Popular Party until 2004. He was the Prime Minister of Spain in 1996 and re-elected with an absolute majority in 2000. He led an important process of economic and social reform and as a result of various privatization initiatives, measures to increase competition, budgetary controls, reduced public spending and tax reductions, the Spanish economy grew, millions of new jobs were created, average income increased, and the public deficit was erased. He has written several books, including: Libertad y Solidaridad ('Freedom and Solidarity') (1991), España: la segunda transición (1994) ('Spain: The Second Transition'), La España en que yo creo (1995) ('The Spain I Believe In'), Ocho años de Gobierno (2004) ('Eight Years of Government') and Retratos y Perfiles: de Fraga a Bush (2005) ('Portraits and Profiles: from Fraga to Bush') and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by several universities around the globe.
