Dr. Ernest J. Moniz, Ph.D. serves as Senior Associate of the Washington Advisory Group. From October 1997 to January 2001, Dr. Moniz was the Under Secretary of the Department of Energy advising the Secretary and overseeing the United States Department of Energy's $7 billion research and development portfolio, including energy and environmental technologies, national security, and fundamental science as well as the national laboratory system with 22 labs and over 50,000 ... people. Dr. Moniz was responsible for the Offices of Science; Fossil Energy; Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy; Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology; Environmental Management; and Civilian Radioactive Waste Management. He was the Department's lead negotiator for cooperative programs with Russia dealing with nuclear weapons material control and disposition. Dr. Moniz also served from 1995 to 1997 as an Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President. At DOE, he had oversight of the science and energy programs, led a comprehensive review of nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship, and served as the Secretary’s special negotiator for Russian nuclear materials disposition programs. He is a Member of the Advisory Board ofAngeleno Group, LLC. Additionally, Dr. Moniz has been a Director of American Science & Engineering Inc. since October 23, 2002. Mr. Moinz is also a member of At DOE, he had oversight of the science and energy programs, led a comprehensive review of nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship, and served as the Secretary’s special negotiator for Russian nuclear materials disposition programs. He also serves on the Boards of the Gas Technology Institute, Nexant, Inc., and the Center for the Advancement of Energy Markets. He is also on the Technology Advisory Board of BP (formerly British Petroleum). Dr. Moniz previously served as a Director of AS&E from 1990 to 1995. He served as a Director of ICF International Inc. until May 18, 2013. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Humboldt Foundation, and the American Physical Society and is also a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and received the 1998 Seymour Cray HPCC Industry Recognition Award for vision and leadership in advancing scientific simulation. Dr. Moniz has served numerous universities, national laboratories, professional societies, and government agencies in advisory roles. Dr. Moniz is Co-Head of the MIT Energy Initiative and is the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems, Director of the Energy Initiative, and Director of the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has served on the faculty since 1973. His principal research interests are in theoretical nuclear physics. At MIT, Dr. Moniz served as the Head of the Department of Physics and the Director of the Bates Linear Accelerator Center. He received a Doctorate in Theoretical Physics from Stanford University and honorary Doctorates from the University of Athens, Michigan State University, and the University of Erlangen-Nurenburg. Dr. Moniz also holds a B.S. degree summa cum laude in Physics from Boston College.
