From 1973 to 1983, he was Professor in Microbiology at American Cancer Society and a Professor in Biology at MIT form 1972 to 1997. Dr. Baltimore has received numerous honors during his distinguished career including the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1975 for discoveries concerning the interaction between tumor viruses and the genetic material of the cell. Further, he has received the 1970 Gustave Stern Award in Virology, the 1971 Eli Lilly and Co. Award in Microbiology and Immunology, the 1999 National Medal of Science, 2000 Warren Alpert Foundation Prize, and 2002 AMA Scientific Achievement Award. Dr. Balitimore’s present research focuses on gene transcription and gene therapy for AIDS and cancer. He was elected to the American National Academy of Sciences in 1974 and is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Academy of Microbiology. Dr. Balitimore received an Honorary Doctorate from Helsinki University, of the Bard College, Mt. Sinai Medical Center, and Mount Holyoke College. He received a Ph.D. in Biology from The Rockefeller University and a BA, with high honors in Chemistry from Swarthmore College. Dr. Balitimore also studied Chemistry at MIT.
