Dr. France A. Córdova, Ph.D. has been President of Purdue University, Indiana since July 16, 2007. Dr. Córdova has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Purdue Research Foundation since 2007. She served as a Chancellor of University of California, Riverside from July 2002 to 2007. She serves as a Director of Energy Systems Network and Science Applications International Corporation. She serves as a Director of Smithsonian Institution and The National Science Foundation. She serves as a Public Trustee of Mayo Clinic Health Systems. Dr. Córdova has been a Trustee of Mayo Clinic Rochester since 2008. She serves as Trustee of Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. Dr. Córdova served as Director of BioCrossroads since September 2007. Dr. Córdova served as Director of Belo Corp. from May 13, 2003 to July 2007. She has served on the President's National Medal of Science Committee, and the Fundamental Science Committee of the National Science and Technology Council and for three years served as a Vice President of the American Astronomical Society. Dr. Córdova is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences' Strategic Communications, National Security and Policy, and Global Affairs Committees and the University of California President's Council on National Laboratories. She holds the title of Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UC Riverside. Her scientific career contributions have been in the areas of observational and experimental astrophysics, multi-spectral research on x-ray and gamma ray sources, and space-borne instrumentation. Dr. Córdova is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Association for Women In Science (AWIS). She has published more than 150 scientific papers, and has a current experiment flying on the European Space Agency's X-Ray Multi-Mirror Mission, Dr. Córdova is the winner of NASA's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Medal, and was recognized as a 2000 Kilby Laureate, for “contributions to society through science, technology, innovation, invention, and education.“ In 1997, She was named one of Hispanic Business magazine's “100 Most Influential Hispanics“ and in 2002 was named one of its “80 Elite Hispanic Women.“ In 1997, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. She attended high school in La Puente, California, east of Los Angeles. Dr. Córdova then entered Stanford University, where she graduated cum laude with BA in English, and, among other activities, conducted anthropological field work in a Zapotec Indian pueblo in Oaxaca, Mexico. Dr. Córdova holds a Ph.D in Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1979.
