Dr. Pastora San Juan Cafferty was a Professor Emerita of University of Chicago since June 2005. Dr. Cafferty served as a Professor at the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration from 1985 to 2005 and was a Faculty Member of University of Chicago from 1971 to 2005. She served as a Research Associate and Senior Study Director with the National Opinion Research Center and a founding member of the faculty of the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of ... Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago. She served as Special Assistant to the General Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and to the Secretary of Transportation in the U.S. Department of Transportation. She served as a Director of Bankmont Financial Corp. and its subsidiaries Harris Trust and Savings Bank, Harris BankCorp. Inc., Harris Financial corporation and Harris Bankmont Inc. She was a Trustee of the Lyric Opera Association and Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Cafferty had been a Director at Waste Management Inc. or one of the predecessors since 1994. She served as a Trustee of Rush University Medical Center. She served as Director of Peoples Energy Corp. since 1988 and a Director of Kimberly-Clark Corporation from 1976 to April 26, 2007. She served as a Director of Integrys Energy Group, Inc. since February 21, 2007. She served as a Member of Advisory Committee of U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Dr. Cafferty had published extensively on the subject of race and ethnicity in the United States including Hispanics in the United States: An Agenda for the Twenty-First Century, with David Engstrom; The Diverse Society, with Leon Chestang.; and The Dilemma of American Immigration with Barry R. Chiswick, Andrew M. Greeley and Teresa A. Sullivan. Her outstanding achievement awards from the Girl Scouts of America and the YWCA; and was named Woman of the Year by Operation PUSH. She was also a White House Fellow, Smithsonian Research Fellow, and Wall Street Journal Fellow. She lectured on Race and Ethnicity in American Life at the University of Chicago honors her work. She graduated from St. Bernard College and held an MA and a Ph.D. degrees in American Literary and Cultural History from George Washington University. She had an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Columbia College. Dr. Cafferty passed away in April 2013.
