Dr. John A. White is a Distinguished Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Arkansas. Dr. White has served as a Consultant to such organizations as AT&T, Briggs & Stratton, Burlington, Coca-Cola, Corning, Digital Equipment, DuPont, Federal Reserve Bank, Ford, IBM, L.L. Bean, Tektronix, Texas Instruments, U.S. Navy, Westinghouse, and Xerox. He founded a logistics consulting firm, SysteCon, Inc., and served as its chairman until its merger with Coopers ... & Lybrand. He was Chancellor of the University of Arkansas from 1997 to June 2008. His industrial and consulting experience includes employment as an engineer with Eastman Chemical Company, Ethyl Corporation, and Rockwell, Inc. He served as Dean of Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology from 1991 to 1997 and its Member of the faculty since 1975. From 1988 to 1991, he served as Assistant Director for Engineering at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. Dr. White served as Presiding Director of JB Hunt Transport Services Inc. and has been its Director since 1998. Dr. White e has been a Director of Motorola Inc. (alternate name: Motorola Solutions, Inc.) since 1995. Dr. White has been Independent Director of Russell Brands, LLC since 1992. He also serves on the boards of the National Science Foundation; Arkansas Bioscience Institute; and Northwest Arkansas Airport Authority. He serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Arkansas Science & Technology Authority. He served as a Director of CAPS Logistics, Inc. He served as a Director of Russell Corporation. He served as a Director of Logility, Inc. since 1997. He served as a Director of Eastman Chemical Co. from January 1994 to May 2004. Dr. White is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering. He was the Chair of the Council of President of the Southeastern Universities Research Association. He was the President and member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He was the President of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). He was the President of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (GEM). Dr. White served as the Chairman of the American Association of Engineering Societies (AAES). He was a Director of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He is a a Member of a number of honor societies—Alpha Pi Mu, Golden Key, Omega Rho, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, and Tau Beta Pi. Among White’s awards are: Humanitarian of the Year from the National Coalition for Community and Justice; NSF's Distinguished Service Award; ASEE's Donald E. Marlowe Distinguished Education Administration Award; the Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award from the Society of Women Engineers; AAES's Kenneth Andrew Roe Award; IIE's highest award, the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award; IIE's David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award; IIE's Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award; IIE's Outstanding Publication Award; IIE's Book of the Year Award (twice); Sigma Nu Fraternity’s Regent’s Medallion of Merit; and the Material Handling Education Foundation's Reed-Apple Award. He has been named the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ Educator of the Year, the International Material Management Society’s Material Manager of the Year, and Georgia Tech's Teacher of the Year. Dr. White received a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Arkansas, a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a Doctorate of Philosophy degree from The Ohio State University. He received Honorary Doctorates from the Katholieke Universiteit of Leuven in Belgium and George Washington University.
