Dr. Inder Mohan Verma, Ph.D., is a Professor of Molecular Biology in the laboratory of Genetics and American Cancer Society. Dr. Verma also serves as an Adjunct Professor in Department of Biology at the University of California, San Diego. He is the Chairman of the Faculty and Academic Council of The Salk Institute and is also a Professor for Biology Research. He joined the Institute in 1974 and is currently a Co-Director of the Laboratory of Genetics and Salk Institute. ... Dr. Verma uses genetically engineered viruses to insert new genes into cells that can then be returned to the body, where they produce the essential protein whose absence causes disease. He is an internationally recognized leader in cancer biology and inflammation. Dr. Verma and Salk Colleagues developed a gene therapy vector, based on a stripped-down version of HIV, a lentiviral vector that can deliver genes to non-dividing cells, which constitute the majority of cells in our bodies. They have used this vector successfully to deliver clotting factor gene to laboratory animals and to transfer a therapeutic gene to retinal cells to mice with an inborn deficiency. His group is also studying two genes implicated in familial breast cancer, BRCA1 and BRCA2, and recently demonstrated that their action is linked to the cells division cycle and that BRCA1 regulates gene activity. Dr. Verma is a Member of Scientific Advisory Board of Greenwich Biotech Partners. He had been a Director of Jubilant Life Sciences Limited since January 2010. He also serves on the board of Celgene and is the Chairman of the Biotech Advisory Committee reporting to the Prime Minister of India. He has been a Director of Cell Genesys Inc. since May 1997 and was a Member of Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Verma serves as a Member of Scientific Advisory Board of Ceregene, Inc., where he was previously a Director. Dr. Verma also serves as a Member of Scientific Advisory Board of VIRxSYS Corporation and Cleveland Biolabs, Inc. Dr. Verma is a distinguished Member of the National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine and the founder and scientific advisor to several pharmaceutical and biotech companies including Signal Pharmaceuticals, UroGenesys, Ventana Pharmaceuticals, Quark Biotech, and others. From 1996 to 1997, he served as a Director of Somatix Therapy Corporation. In 1995, the National Institutes of Health selected Dr. Verma as the Chairman of a committee reviewing the scope and advancement of gene therapy. He has been a member of the faculty since 1979. Previously, Dr. Verma served as the President of the American Society for Gene Therapy from 2000 to 2001 and has expertise in Gene Therapy, Cancer. He has been awarded and honored by NIH Outstanding Investigator in 1988, The Third World Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, and March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation Franklin D. Roosevelt Investigator, 1997. Dr. Verma completed his Postdoctoral study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Weizmann Institute in Rehovoth, Israel. He received a M.Sc. and a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Lucknow University, India.
