Mr. James is the Vice Chairman of The Kennedy Center Corporate Fund Board, a Trustee of The Second Stage Theatre, a Trustee of Woods Hole Oceanographic, a Trustee of Wildlife Conservation Society, a Board Member of The Council for the United States and Italy, and the Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of American Ballet Theatre. He serves as a Member of Advisory Council at TechnoServe, Inc. Mr. James is actively involved in various capacities at Harvard University and is the Chairman and Trustee of his reunion classes for each of Choate Rosemary Hall, Harvard College, and Harvard Business School. He served as Director of Harrisdirect LLC since 1996, and Credit Suisse (USA), Inc. He served as the Chairman and Director of Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette Inc. since 1996. He served as a Director of Costco Companies Inc.
