From 1969 to 1972, he was Visiting Professor at the Universidade de Sao Paulo in Brasil. He was the Senior Author on the research proposal that led to Viagra, the first oral treatment for erectile dysfunction and he has co-authored over 115 publications and patents and was a key member of the research teams that discovered doxazosin (Cardura™) and amlodipine (Norvasc™). Dr. Campbell's scientific contributions have been recognized by Royal Society of Chemistry Award for Medicinal Chemistry (1989), the Herschberg Award from the American Chemical Society (1997), CIA Individual Achievement Award (2006) and the Industry Research Institute (US) Achievement Award (1997). He has been a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences since 2002. Since May 1999, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society. He is the named Inventor on Patents covering Cardura and Norvasc. He was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List (2006) and was elected FRS in 1999. He was admitted to the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa by the University of Kent at Canterbury. In 1997, Dr. Campbell became the first non-American to receive the Herschberg Award from the American Chemical Society and done PhD from the University of Birmingham in 1965.
