He served as Research Scientist at Ames from 1971 to 1978. He has been Chairman of Space Foundation since January 20, 2010. He served as Vice Chairman of Space Foundation until January 20, 2010. He served as Board Co-chair of Air Force Scientific Advisory Board from 1996 to 1999 and its Member from 1994 to 2001. He has been a Director of OSI Systems, Inc. since May 5, 2010. He serves as Member of the Defense Science Board. Dr. Ballhaus serves as a Director of The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Inc. and is a member of the engineering advisory boards at UC Berkeley, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Southern California. Dr. Ballhaus also served as Director of Astronautics at NASA Ames from 1980 to 1984. Dr. Ballhaus served as Trustee of The Aerospace Corporation. He serves on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Advisory Council, JPL Advisory Council and on the Senior Council of the NASA Alumni League. Dr. Ballhaus' awards and honors include: the presidential ranks of distinguished executive and meritorious executive, conferred by President Ronald Reagan; the NASA Distinguished Service Medal; the Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Medal; the Air Force Scroll of Appreciation; the National Reconnaissance Office Gold Medal; the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award from UC Berkeley; AIAA's Lawrence Sperry Award; the Arthur S. Flemming Award from the Washington, D.C., Junior Chamber of Commerce; the Distinguished Executive Service Award from the Senior Executives Association; and the Eminent Engineer Award from Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society at UC Berkeley. Dr. Ballhaus is Member of the International Academy of Astronautics and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the Royal Aeronautical Society. He has been Member of the National Academy of Engineering and is serving a three-year term as councilor of the academy. He published more than 40 papers on computational aerodynamics. Dr. Ballhaus is graduate of the University of California at Berkeley where he earned Ph.D. In engineering and bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering.
