Background*

Mr. R. Hewitt Pate has been General Counsel and Vice President at Chevron Corp. since August 3, 2009. Mr. Pate served as a Partner at Hunton & Williams LLP from June 2005 to August 2009. He was a Senior Official in the DOJ's Antitrust Division since 2001, first serving as Deputy Assistant Attorney General, where he oversaw matters including airline, transportation, energy and regulatory issues and then as Acting Assistant Attorney General before his confirmation by the ... Senate as Anti-Trust Chief. Mr. Pate stressed the importance of international cooperation through the International Competition Network and served as Chair of the OECD Competition Committee’s working group on international antitrust enforcement cooperation. He promoted aggressive criminal enforcement against interna-tional price-fixing cartels, resulting in some of the largest fines in Division history, and successfully argued a major Supreme Court case on international cartel enforcement. Before joining the Justice Department, Mr. Pate practiced at Hunton & Williams from 1990 to 2001. In 1999, he was an Ewald Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he taught Unfair Competition. Prior to joining Hunton & Williams, Mr. Pate clerked for Justices Lewis F. Powell, Jr. and Anthony M. Kennedy of the U.S. Supreme Court, and for Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Mr. Pate earned his bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina and his law degree from the University of Virginia.
