He served as the Shields Warren-Mallinckrodt Professor of Medical Research of Harvard Medical School from 1981 to 1999. Trained as an infectious diseases specialist, Dr. Moellering has been actively involved in laboratory research for 35 years carrying out numerous studies of the mechanism of action and mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents. He serves as Chairman of one of the major academic departments of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Boston, Massachusetts from 1981 to 1996. He served as Physician-in-Chief at the New England Deaconess Hospital from 1981 to 1996. He served as President of Infectious Diseases Society of America from 1990 to 1991. A recognized expert in his field, he is a Member of several professional organizations, including the Infectious Disease Society of America and the American Academy of Microbiology. As reported in over 400 publications in scientific journals, his work includes numerous studies of the mechanism of action and mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents. He has defined some of the important mechanisms of interaction of antimicrobial agents, particularly against the enterococcus which has been a particular investigative interest for many years. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Garrod Medal from the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, the Feldman Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Hoechst-Roussel Award from the American Academy of Microbiology. Dr. Moellering is the 2006 recipient of the Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Master of the American College of Physicians and has been elected to membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. Dr. Moellering was a Research Fellow in Infectious Disease, Department of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital and was a Clinical Fellow in Infectious Disease, Department of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Dr. Moellering holds an Honorary Doctor of science degree from Valparaiso University. He holds an M.D. degree cum laude from Harvard Medical School and completed his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. He holds Masters degree of the American College of Physicians. He holds B.A. in Zoology from Valparaiso University.
