Mr. Ashley Highfield has been the Chief Executive Officer of Johnston Press plc since November 1, 2011. Mr. Highfield served as the Head of Consumer & Online Business and Managing Director of Microsoft's UK Operations at Microsoft Corporation from November 2008 to October 2011. He was responsible for consumer services across PC, mobile and internet platforms including Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox Live, MSN, Hotmail and Internet Explorer. He was also responsible for Microsoft’s ... online advertising business. Mr. Highfield served as Vice President of Consumer & Online UK of Microsoft Corporation from November 2008 to October 2011. He joined Microsoft in December 2008 from Kangaroo, where he was the Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Highfield served as Director of Future Media and Technology at British Broadcasting Corp. from November 2006 to June 30, 2008 and also served as its Member of Executive Board, during an eight year spell at the BBC, where he was responsible for launching BBC iPlayer. He is a Member of Council of Industry Advisers. He also served as a Director of New Media and Technology of British Broadcasting Corporation since October 2000. He served as a Director of Future Media and Technology at BBC Worldwide Limited. Mr. Highfield was responsible for British Broadcasting Corporation internet output, interactive TV and new platforms (broadband, mobile etc). Subsequently, he had additional responsibilities covering the BBC's Technology portfolio (predominantly the IT strategy and management of the contract with the newly created BBC Technology Limited), and Research and Development, creating the new division of New Media and Technology. Previously, he served as a Managing Director of Flextech Interactive, the pay TV company's new media division. Former positions include Head of IT and New Media for NBC's European Channels. Since his arrival, Mr. Highfield has driven the reach of bbc.co.uk to over a third of the United Kingdom internet population, the highest figure in the history of the UK's favourite website, and has doubled the number of visitors to the site. He was responsible for the introduction of BBCi - the new name for the BBC's interactive services working across the web, interactive TV and personal organisers. Mr. Highfield worked as a consultant with Coopers & Lybrand, working on IT projects within the media and telecommunications world from 1988 to 1994. His work included the launch of Vodacom in South Africa, and a year spent with ANC. In 1995, Mr. Highfield was appointed as the Head of IT and New Media for the American broadcaster NBC's European channels, during which time he devised their new media strategy and launched NBC Europe's website. He joined Flextech TV in 1996. Flextech merged with Telewest in late 1999. He created their new media organisation, Flextech Interactive, of which he became the Managing Director. He built a 100-strong team from scratch that was responsible for providing digital and interactive services to the media and cable television industries. Under his direction, Flextech launched a total of 14 new websites and a range of interactive television services over a period of four years. He created and launched the United Kingdom's first multi-platform interactive TV channel, and part of the team responsible was subsequently spun out to create the interactive TV company Smashed Atom. He has been a Director of Johnston Press plc since November 1, 2011. He serves as a Non-Executive Director of William Hill plc. He serves as Member of Council of Industry Advisers at GMT Communications Partners LLP. Mr. Highfield was appointed a Non-Executive Director of a number of companies in which he oversaw Flextech's investment. These included: Multimap.com, home improvement website Improveline, the reference engine Xrefer.com, and the United Kingdom's leading (and profitable!) online ticketing company WayAheadGroup. Shortly before leaving, he was given responsibility for Telewest's broadband content service, Blueyonder. He is a Governor of the British Film Institute, a Fellow of the Royal Television Society, a member of BAFTA, a Chartered (Information) Engineer. He holds Business Computing Systems degree from the City University Business School, London.
