His doctoral thesis was under the direction of Bernard Belleau, the well-known Canadian medicinal chemist whose discoveries included the HIV drug, 3TC. Shortly after, he undertook a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University, under the Nobel Laureate, Paul Greengard. Dr. Penney holds a B.Sc. with honors in biochemistry in 1972 and a Ph.D. in bioorganic chemistry in 1977, both from McGill University, Montreal.
