Prof. David S. Perlin, Ph.D. has been the President and Director of the Public Health Research Institute (PHRI) since 2005, a 66 year old biomedical research organization specializing in infectious diseases. Dr. Perlin served as a Scientific Director of PHRI from 1992 to 2005. and helped PHRI to emerge as one of the foremost tuberculosis research organizations in the world. He joined PHRI in 1985. He served as a Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at New ... Jersey Medical School - UMDJN in 2003. Dr. Perlin served as a Consultant to the US Senate Finance Committee's investigation of the Fall 2001 anthrax outbreak. Dr. Perlin is an Expert in drug-resistant fungal infections and the rapid diagnosis of opportunistic pathogens in high risk patients. Dr. Perlin's laboratory studies the molecular basis for clinical resistance to antifungal drugs and helps develop rapid diagnostic approaches for fungal pathogens, agents of bioterrorism, and new disease agents like the SARS coronavirus. He also provided leadership for the development of the International Center for Public Health, a specialized center for infectious diseases research in Newark, NJ. Dr. Perlin serves as Chairman and Member of Scientific Board at Myconostica, Ltd. He has been Member of Scientific Advisory Board of EluSys Therapeutics Inc. since October 19, 2005. He serves as Member of Scientific Advisory Board of Biodelivery Sciences International Inc. He serves as a Member of Medical Advisory Board of PinnacleCare International, LLC. He serves as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center. He worked closely with the Chinese Government to address SARS, TB and other emerging infectious diseases in China. He is an Executive Committee member of the Northeast Biodefense Center. He serves on NIH review panels, is on the editorial board of a number of biomedical research journals, is a member of Senator Jon Corzine's New Jersey Healthcare Taskforce, and serves on the New York City Department of Health advisory panel on bioterrorism and emerging pathogens. Dr. Perlin is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences Emerging Infectious Disease Discussion Group. Dr. Perlin holds an AB degree in Biology from Brandeis University in 1976 and a PhD in Plant Physiology from Cornell University in 1980. He pursued postdoctoral studies in Biochemistry & Genetics at the Yale University School of Medicine from 1980 to 1982 and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry from 1983 to 1985. He has been a regular commentator on radio and television, lectures on biodefense issues, has published numerous letters in the New York Times and other media outlets, and wrote one of the primary scientific critiques of the outbreak for the U.S. Senate.
