Background

Mr. Hans F. Loeser is a Senior Partner at Foley Hoag L.L.P. After boarding school in England, he came to the U.S. in the first few days of 1940. Two years later, he commenced five years of service in the U.S. Army during World War II (including combat service with 82nd Airborne Division and Chief of Section in U.S. Military Government in Germany; last rank: Captain). He entered Harvard Law School in 1947 and graduated magna cum laude in 1950. He joined Foley Hoag in ... 1950, then a small firm of 9 lawyers and became a partner on January 1, 1956. He became a Managing Partner in the early '60s and remained on the Executive Committee for about 20 years, for most of that period as its Chairman. This was a time of rapid growth of the firm and of its national and international reputation. His practice was focused on business law. He also did much administrative law work, with an active practice before the Civil Aeronautics Board (representing most New England-based airlines), the Interstate Commerce Commission (mostly in freight rate matters) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (representing Boston Gas Company, the largest gas utility in New England, in all matters, including major rate adjustments). I also represented many other individuals, New England-based corporations and New England operations of national or international companies, including a significant number of emerging high tech corporations. In the last 20 years he became more active in the international field, representing a number of important European companies in establishing and operating their American branches or subsidiaries and American companies in licensing and other operations in Europe. My fluent knowledge of German was helpful in these engagements. He served for about 20 years as Honorary Consul-General of the Republic of Senegal in Boston, was a director of Boston Gas Company, for many years served on lawyer disciplinary boards in Massachusetts, including as a member of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers, and have been a director, trustee or overseer of a substantial number of charitable and educational institutions. He is a Fellow of both the Massachusetts and the American Bar Foundations.
