Mr. Joseph W. Prueher has been Consulting Professor of Stanford University's Institute of International Studies since 2001. Mr. Prueher is a Senior Advisor on The Preventive Defense Project. He serves as Director of Merrill Lynch & Co Inc of BofA Merrill Lynch Preferred Capital Trust II. He was the Uniets States Ambassador to the People's Republic of China, from November 1999 to May 2001. As the Chief of the United States’ mission in China, he served twice as the President ... and was responsible for directing, coordinating, and managing the activities of all United States Executive Branch activities in China. Prior to assuming duties in China, he served as a Lecturer and a Senior Advisor at the Stanford-Harvard Preventive Defense Program and as a Senior Fellow at the Center for Naval Analysis. He completed 35 years of distinguished service in the United States Navy in May 1999. From January 1996 to February 1999, he was the 17th Commander-in-Chief of the United States Pacific Command (CINCPAC), the Senior Military Commander of all the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force troops in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and their littoral areas. In this capacity, he worked with the Asia-Pacific civil and military leaders to promote collective security in the area. Prior to that, from 1989 to 1995, he served as a Commandant of Midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis; a Commander of Carrier Battle Group ONE based in San Diego; a Commander of the United States Mediterranean Sixth Fleet and of NATO Striking Forces based in Gaeta, Italy; and as a Vice Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon. Qualified in 52 types of aircraft, he has extensive flight and combat experience, with over 5600 flight hours and over 1000 carrier landings. He has held numerous senior tactical commands and led the formation of the Naval Strike Warfare Center in Fallon, Nevada. He has been a Director of Emerson Electric Co., since 2001.
