In his capacity as the Chairman, he served as the Principal Military Advisor to the President, the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council, and the Homeland Security Council. He is the first Marine to have served as either the Chairman or Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During his tenure as the Chairman, he was responsible for providing military advice on the United States operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. In October 2001, he was appointed the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As the Vice Chairman, he served as the Chairman of the Joint Requirements Oversight Council, the Vice Chairman of the Defense Acquisition Board, and as a Member of the National Security Council Deputies Committee and the Nuclear Weapons Council. In addition, he acted for the Chairman in all aspects of the Planning, Programming, and Budgeting System including participation in the Defense Resources Board. On April 22, 2005, President George W. Bush nominated General Pace to be the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He has been a Director of Textura Corporation since December 2012 and serves as Director of Tresys Technology LLC. He serves as a Director of AlienVault, LLC. He serves as a Member of Advisory Council of Business Executives for National Security. He serves as a Member of Advisory Board at Defense Finance and Accounting Service. He served as a Member of Honorary Advisory Board at The Boulder Crest Retreat for Wounded Warriors since September 2012. He holds many personal decorations from both the United States and other nations, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and numerous Navy and Marine Corps Commendations. He has also received the Keeper of the Flame Award by the Center for Security Policy, the Patriot Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, and Georgetown University's President's Medal. In June 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civil award. The President of the United States recognized Mr. Pace for his selfless service and visionary leadership as one of the nation’s most respected and admired military officers. He is a Graduate of the United States Naval Academy and holds an M.B.A. from George Washington University. Mr. Pace is also a graduate of the Infantry Officers' Advanced Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, in Quantico, Virginia; and the National War College, at Ft. McNair, Washington, DC. He graduated from Teaneck High School in 1963 and received his commission in the Marines in June 1967.
