Before retiring from McKinsey & Company, Dr. Foster served as a Founder and Managing Director at the firm's private equity practice. He co-founded McKinsey & Company's high technology practice in the late 1970s, the chemicals practice in the early 1980s, the healthcare practice in the late 1980s, and the private equity practice in the 1990s. In addition, Dr. Foster led the multi-decade consulting activities with one of McKinsey & Company's largest clients, a healthcare company. He served over fifty leading global companies primarily in healthcare, electronics, and chemicals as well as a number of nonprofit institutions and his research interests are in the relationships between capital formation, innovation, and regulation. Dr. Foster serves as an Independent Director of Meehan Combs LP. He serves as a Director of W. M. Keck Foundation, Council for Aid to Education, Unio Holdings, LLC, and is a Member of the Board of Directors of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Foster serves as a Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Foster served as a Director of Santa Fe Institute Of Science Inc. He served as a Director of Council on Foreign Relations, Inc. Dr. Foster served as Director of The TCW Group, Inc. He served as a Director of Athenahealth, Inc. from 2005 to June 7, 2012. He is a Senior Faculty Fellow at Yale University School of Management where he teaches “Managing in Times of Rapid Change“ and Healthcare Information Technology. From 1999 to 2000, Dr. Foster led the Study Group for the Council on Foreign Relations on Innovation and Economic Power which led to the publication of, Technological Innovation and Economic Performance. He has written two books, “Innovation: The Attacker’s Advantage” in 1986 and “Creative Destruction” in 2001. Dr. Foster received a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. degrees from Yale University in Engineering and Applied Science.
