Background

Mr. Peter F. May serves as Vice President for Legal Affairs at The American University of Beirut (AUB). As the University’s first in-house counsel, Mr. May works with AUB’s senior officers, deans and board of trustees to establish the internal legal function and conduct a thorough assessment of the institution’s legal needs. According to the AUB statement, he provides day-to-day counsel to each of AUB’s academic and support units, as well as the AUB Medical Center. He ... also coordinates and supervises the work of all outside counsel to AUB in both New York and Lebanon. He joins AUB after serving in a number of legal and senior line management roles since 1996, at World Learning, a global education, training and exchange organization, headquartered in Brattleboro, Vermont and Washington, DC, US.World Learning works globally to enhance the capacity and commitment of individuals, institutions and communities to create a more peaceful and just world. Its programs include The Experiment in International Living, SIT Study Abroad, the SIT Graduate Institute and World Learning International Development and Exchange Programs.In addition to serving as World Learning’s General Counsel, he has also managed the global human resources, risk management, and compliance areas and supported the World Learning board of trustees as their Corporate Secretary. Through his active participation in the National Association of College and University Attorneys, he has also worked to assist US academic institutions as they expand their activities internationally.A sought-after speaker on a variety of topics involving the legal aspects of international education and NGO management, His recent article, “Common Legal Issues When Employing Staff in Support of Overseas Academic Programs,” published in The Journal of College and University Law in May 2010, serves as a comprehensive reference for counsel and academic administrators working internationally.His travels over the years have taken him to 50 countries including Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, and Morocco. Prior to joining World Learning, he was a corporate associate with the law firm of Ropes & Gray in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated with a BA from Yale University and a JD from Boston University School of Law.
