Background

Dr. Victor J. Dzau, M.D., serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer at Duke University Health System, Inc. Dr. Dzau serves as a Senior Advisor at Kearny Venture Partners. He has been the Senior Scientific Advisor of Chondrogene Ltd. since January 2004. He has served as a Scientific Advisor to Novartis, Merck, Bristol Meyers Squibb, and other pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Dzau is the Chancellor of Health Affairs, President, and Chief Executive Officer at Health ... System of Duke University Medical Center, since July 2004. He is also James B. Duke Professor of Medicine and Director of Molecular and Genomic Vascular Biology at Duke. A leader in cardiovascular translational research, Dr. Dzau has led his laboratory in the study of molecular and genetic mechanisms of cardiovascular disease and has applied genomic and gene transfer technologies to develop novel therapeutic approaches. He has developed a genetically modified coronary bypass graft that is in clinical trial. Dr. Dzau served as the Chairman of the National Institutes of Health Cardiovascular Disease Advisory Committee and served on the Advisory Committee of the Director of National Institutes of Health. From July 1996 until September 2004, prior to joining Duke, he was the Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston Massachusetts as well as Physician in Chief. Prior to Dr. Dzau’s work at Harvard and Brigham and Women's, he served as the Arthur Bloomfield Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at University in Stanford, California from 1995 to 1996. Dr. Dzau served as the Chairman of Scientific Advisory Board of Corgentech Inc., since January 1999. Dr. Dzau serves as a Member of the Scientific Advisory Boards at CV Therapeutics, Atherogenics Inc., and United Therapeutics Corporation. He has been a Director at Genzyme General and Sanofi Biosurgery since 2000. Dr. Dzau has been Independent Director of Medtronic, Inc since February 21, 2008 and Pepsico Inc., since July 22, 2005. Dr. Dzau has been a Director of Genzyme Corporation since 2000 and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. since April 2007. He served as Director of Corgentech Inc. since January 1999. Additionally, Dr. Dzau serves on the Boards of the Harvard Clinical Research Institute. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Partners Healthcare System and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Dzau has been a Director of Research at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, since 1996. He is a Founding Member and serves on the Executive Committee of The Academy at Harvard Medical School and is the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Harvard-Partners Genetics/Genomics Center. Dr. Dzau is a Member of the Joint Faculty Committee of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and served on the jury for the Lemelson-MIT Prize for Science and Innovation. From 1990 to 1996, he served as the Director of the Falk Cardiovascular Research Center, the Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and a Professor of Medicine, all at the Stanford University School of Medicine. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Dzau is active on Institutional Committees and Advisory Boards. He has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including the American Heart Association Goldblatt Award for Cardiovascular Research, the William N. Creasy Award in Clinical Pharmacology, Burroughs-Wellcome Fund, the 1992 Distinguished Scientist Award to the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, and the 1994 National Institute of Health MERIT Award. In 1998, Dr. Dzau received the Commemorative Gold Medal from the Ludwig-Maximillian University of Munich and E.K. Frey-Werle Foundation and in 1999 he received the Louis and Artur Lucian Award for Research in Circulatory Disease from McGill University. Dr. Dzau was awarded the prestigious 2001 Gustav Nylin Medal from the Swedish Royal College of Medicine and the Swedish Cardiology Society, as well as the 2001 Novartis Award for Hypertension Research of the American Heart Association and the 2002 Astra Zeneca Award from the International Society for Hypertension. He was honored by the European Academy of Science and Arts with the Kurt Polzer Prize in Biomedical Science (2003). Dr. Dzau received the first Hatter Award from the Medical Research Council of South Africa in 2000. He was also awarded the 2004 Max Delbruck Medal by the Max Delbruck Center for Molecular Medicine, Berlin, Germany, the 2005 Golden Door Award by the International Institute of Boston, and a 2005 Ellis Island Medal of Honor by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations. Also active in scientific and professional organizations, Dr. Dzau was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vascular Medicine and Biology and is a Founding Member of the Society of Vascular Medicine and Biology. He has been elected a Member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science (USA), Academia Sinica (Taiwan), and the European Academy of Science and Arts. Dr. Dzau received an M.A. degree, with honors, in 1996 from Harvard University in Boston, a B.Sc. degree in 1968, and an M.D. degree in 1972 from McGill University in Montreal, and underwent a postgraduate training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
