Background

Prof. Mitchell P. Marcus, Ph.D serves as President of the faculty senate at the University of Pennsylvania and serves on many program committees for ACL, AAAI, and DARPA. Dr. Marcus is a computational linguist and chair of the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania as well as also holding an appointment in the Linguistics Department. Dr. Marcus is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence, Department of Computer and Information ... Science, University of Pennsylvania (Natural language Processing Advisor). He is a Fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence and served as President of the Association for Computational Linguistics. He was the principal investigator of the Penn Treebank Project and is a member of the External Advisory Committee of the Center for the Study of Language and Information at Stanford University. He serves as Director of Metanexus Institute. Dr. Marcus serves as Member of Advisory Board of Netxentry LLC. He also serves as Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of H5. He served as member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories. His research interests include: statistical and symbolic methods for automatic acquisition of linguistic structure; methodologies for annotation of linguistic structure in large text corpora; natural language processing; and cognitive science. Dr. Marcus studied Linguistics and Applied Mathematics at Harvard University as an undergraduate (magna cum laude), and received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
