Background

Ms. Alice P. Gast has been President of Lehigh University since 2006. Ms. Gast serves as Vice President for Research and Associate Provost at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She joined MIT in 2001 as Vice President for Research and Associate Provost and holds the Robert T. Haslam chair in chemical engineering. Previously, she served as Associate Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University. She has been a Director of Chevron Corporation ... since October 2012. She is well known as an outstanding teacher and an internationally renowned scholar in the field of complex fluids and colloids. Her scientific findings have direct impact and applications in biotechnology, nanotechnology and advanced materials and her research has attracted support from major agencies including the National Science Foundation and NASA, as well as from several major industries. Ms. Gast was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2001 and one year later was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Earlier this year she was elected to the Board of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She began her academic career as a student at the University of Southern California where she distinguished herself as valedictorian of her graduating class. She formally commenced her research and teaching career as a member of the Stanford University faculty in the Department of Chemical Engineering. At Stanford, she was repeatedly recognized for her outstanding research and teaching. Ms. Gast served as a Director of National Space Biomedical Research Institute, Technology Review Inc. and Lehigh University. She was the recipient of the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher Scholar Award, the National Academy of Science Award for Initiative in Research, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Alexander von Humboldt Award. She serves as a member of, among others, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the American Physical Society. Ms. Gast received her PhD and M.A. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, where she was a Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Fellow, and her BSc. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Southern California, where she was valedictorian of her senior class.
