Background

Dr. Jesse Rothstein, Ph.D serves as Associate Professor of Public Policy and Economics at the University of California, Berkeley and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Prior to coming to Berkeley, Dr. Rothstein taught at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. In 2009-2010, he served as Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers and as Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of Labor. ... Dr. Rothstein’s research is on Education Policy with a particular focus on the way that the design of the education system ameliorates or reinforces the effects of children’s families on their academic or economic progress. He has studied the role of affirmative action in law school admissions, the evolution and future prospects of the black-white test score gap, the importance of peer groups to school quality, and the impact of residential and school segregation on black students’ achievement. A second strand of research concerns the use and misuse of student test score data. He serves as a Member of Fund Evaluation Advisory Council of Chicago Public Education Fund. Dr. Rothstein has studied the value of SAT scores in college admissions decisions and the use of student achievement records to assess teacher quality. A third strand of research relates to local housing markets. One recent study used house prices to infer residents’ valuation of school infrastructure spending, while an study assessed the hypothesis that small inflows of minority residents into a neighborhood can cause it to rapidly “tip” to majority-minority. Dr. Rothstein holds a Ph.D. in Economics, Masters in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley, and an AB in mathematics from Harvard.
