He was responsible for Hughes' acquisition of Satellite Transponder Leasing Corp. and the SBS fleet of Ku-band satellites from the IBM Corp. Mr. Hartenstein served as President of Equatorial Communications Services Company in Mountain View, Calif., from 1984 to 1987, now a division of GTE. Prior to joining Equatorial, he served as Vice President of Hughes Communications' Galaxy program, from 1981 to 1984. He directed the marketing and development of the original Galaxy satellite fleet, serving the broadcast television and cable programming industries. He joined Hughes Aircraft Company in 1972. Before transferring to Hughes Communications in 1981, he held a succession of engineering, operations, and program management positions at Hughes' Space and Communications Company and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Mr. Hartenstein serves as the Chairman of DIRECTV Latin America LLC. He served as the Chairman of HD Partners Acquisition Corp. from December 2005 to February 2008. He served as the Chairman of DIRECTV Global until December 31, 2004. He served as the Non-Executive Chairman of SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. from November 12, 2009 to April 2013. Mr. Hartenstein served as a Vice Chairman of DIRECTV Group Inc. from December 22, 2003 to December 31, 2004. He has been a Director of HD Partners Acquisition Corp. since December 2005, SanDisk Corp. since November 28, 2005, CVEO Corporation (formerly Converse Corp.) since November 2002, SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. since August 2008 and Broadcom Corp. since June 2008. He served as Director of Consumer Electronics Association. He has also been honored as a 2001 inductee into the National Academy of Engineering. In 2002, he was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame. He holds BS in Aerospace Engineering and Mathematics from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 1971 and 1972, respectively. He also holds an MS degree in Applied Physics and Mechanics from Cal Tech in 1974 while a Hughes Aircraft Company Masters Fellow.
