Mr. Dion Madsen is a Senior Managing Partner at BDC Venture Capital since January 2013. He Madsen joined BDC Venture Capital in 2012. He previously was a Consulting Managing Director and leader of the investment practice at Unilever Technology Ventures, which he joined in 2005 and he led the completion of the investing cycle for Unilever’s North American Corporate Venture activity. In 2004, Mr. Madsen held multiple roles at Chiron Corporation, including a Director of Investor Relations and later in Corporate Development and led Chiron Corporation’s investor communications, and worked in corporate development, building a new strategy for the company’s $500M BioPharma business. From 1998 to 2003, he served as a Partner of RBC Capital Partners (RBC), where he was responsible for investing in early stage healthcare companies in Canada and the United States, and for opening an office covering the Western Canadian market. At RBC, Mr. Madsen led RBC's investments in early-stage North American healthcare companies. While at RBC, he also served as the Chief Financial Officer of Cytovax Biotechnologies Inc., where he was responsible for raising a private placement and taking Cytovax to its initial public offering in 2001 and also restructured Synapse Bio-technologies, successfully selling the company to BioMarin. He joined RBC Capital Partners in 1998 to start up the firm's office in Edmonton and worked in commercial banking. Prior to joining RBC, Mr. Madsen was the Chief Financial Officer at Cyberion Networking Inc., where he re-financed the company, achieved positive cash flow, and spun off the internet assets while building a new business model and team to develop secure online document collaboration. While at Cyberion, Mr. Madsen initiated technology development on a secure Internet application that was spun out and ultimately sold by The DocSpace Company Inc. to Critical Path. He has also held the roles of M&A Advisor, Strategic Consultant and Chief Financial Officer for a biotechnology company. Mr. Madsen is a Director of Elixir Pharmaceuticals, He currently holds a Board Observer seat at Surface Logix. He is a Director Healthloop, Pharmaca, and On-Q-ity. Mr. Madsen has served as a Director of HaloSource, SurfaceLogix, Biostar Inc., Expresso Fitness, and Idun Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. He has been a Board Observer on numerous biotechnology companies and has sat on the boards of directors of many venture capital funds and companies in the pharmaceutical and health care industries. Mr. Madsen has also authored articles on subjects like “Investing in Consumer-Directed Health: New Opportunities for Venture Capital Investment“. He is a C.F.A. Charter holder. Mr. Madsen holds a B.Com degree specializing in Finance and Marketing from the University of Saskatchewan.
