Dr. William Herbert Miller, III, Bill, is the Chairman and Portfolio Manager of Legg Mason Capital Management LLC. He also serves as the Chairman, Chief Investment Officer, and Portfolio Mnaager at Legg Mason Inc. Dr. Miller previously served as the Chief Investment Officer at Legg-Mason Capital Management LLC and also was the Director of Research at the firm from October 1981 to June 1985. He joined the firm in 1981. Previously, Dr. Miller was a Treasurer at the J.E. ... Baker Company. He serves as the Chairman of Santa Fe Institute of Science Inc. Dr. Miller is on the Board of Trustees of the Santa Fe Institute. His unique investment management philosophy and approach to undervalued stocks has also made him the subject of profiles in numerous books as well as publications, including The New York Times, Barron's, Business Week, Kiplinger's, Money, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, and Smart Money. Dr. Miller was ranked among the top 30 most influential people in investing, when SmartMoney named him a member of the “Power 30”. He was also named by Money magazine as “The Greatest Money Manager of the 1990's“ and was named Morningstar's 1998 “Domestic Equity Manager of the Year“ In 1999, Morningstar.com selected him as the “Fund Manager of the Decade”. Also in 1999, Barron’s named Dr. Miller to its All-Century Investment Team in 1999 and BusinessWeek called him one of the “Heroes of Value Investing”. He has also been a guest on Wall Street Week, CNBC, and other financial news programs. Dr. Miller served as a Military Intelligence Officer overseas. He received a C.F.A. designation in 1986. Dr. Miller pursued graduate studies in Philosophy in the Ph.D. program at The Johns Hopkins University and graduated with honors from the Washington and Lee University with a degree in Economics in 1972.
