His genetic research documented the universality of the genetic code, discovered the mechanism of peptide chain termination, identified the genetic basis of ten major heritable diseases, opened the understanding of triplet repeat diseases - Fragile X, myotonic dystrophy, and others, developed the STR method of DNA-based personal identification for forensic studies, and developed a viral vector vaccine for HIV. Dr. Caskey has been elected to the Division of Life Sciences of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada. His personal identification patent is the basis of worldwide application for forensic science. He is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and Royal Society of Canada. He is also a Director and Chief Executive Officer of Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases (IMM) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He is responsible for daily management of the IMM as well as developing research programs and recruiting additional scientists to the company. Since 2004, Dr. Caskey has served as an Adjunct Professor and as a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the IMM. He was the Chairman of the Advisory Panel on Forensic Uses of DNA Tests, United States Congress Office of Technology Assessment from 1989 to 1990. He was a Committee Member on DNA Technology in Forensic Science and National Research Council. Before joining Merck, he served 25 years at Baylor College of Medicine in a series of senior positions, including the Chairman, Department of Human and Molecular Genetics, and Director, and Human Genome Center. Dr. Caskey served as the President of the American Society of Human Genetics and the Human Genome Organization from 1993 to 1996. He was also the President of Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science. He was an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics, Biochemistry, and Cell Biology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Caskey has received numerous academic and industry related honors. He received the Distinguished Texas Geneticist Award from the Texas Genetics Society in 1998 and serves on Texas Governor Mr. Rick Perry's Council on Science and Biotechnology. He served on the National Institutes of Health, on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of the American Medical Association and Science, and as an Editor of the Annual Review of Medicine. Dr. Caskey has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Duke University.
