He serves on a number of scientific, higher education, and government committees. Sir Sykes served as a Board Member of Higher Education Funding Council for England. He received his knighthood in the 1994 New Year Honours list for services to the pharmaceutical industry. He was awarded Honorary Citizenship of Singapore in 2004 for his contribution to the development of the country’s biomedical sciences industry. He holds a number of degrees and awards from institutions both in the United Kingdom and overseas. Sir Sykes holds a Ph.D. in Microbial Biochemistry from Bristol University, was awarded a first class honors degree in Microbiology from Queen Elizabeth College, University of London, and holds a D.Sc. degree from the University of London.
